Innovative Science Projects Showcase Talent at Fraser Valley Regional Science Fair

Students Present Their Projects at Fraser Valley Regional Science Fair

Grade 12 students from schools in the Fraser Valley region gathered at the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) to showcase their science fair projects at the Fraser Valley Regional Science Fair. Participants came from Langley, Abbotsford, Mission, Chilliwack, and Hope, presenting a total of 116 projects to the public and judges.

At Dasmesh Punjabi School in Abbotsford, five projects were initially chosen from each class before being narrowed down to three for the final presentation. The event aimed to encourage students’ passion for science and innovation, with projects covering a wide range of topics such as plant photosynthesis, global warming, mental health, and even 3-D printing.

One of the standout projects at the fair was by Grade 8 students Japandeep Gill and Metaab Khangura. Inspired by a frustrating experience at the airport, Khangura designed a sensor that drivers can install in their vehicles to help them locate parking spots in busy lots. This innovative solution not only assists drivers in finding parking but also helps them locate their vehicle upon their return. Gill and Khangura expressed their excitement about the project, hoping to advance to the national level.

The young scientists eagerly awaited the awards ceremony on Wednesday to see how their projects would fare. The event served as an opportunity to cultivate students’ interest in science and technology while fostering creativity and critical thinking skills among participants.

Students had the chance to win cash and prizes if they were selected as winners of specific categories or overall grand prizes.

Overall, it was an excellent opportunity for young scientists to showcase their work and get inspired by other talented individuals in this field.

As we awaited for these young scientists’ achievements on Wednesday evening at UFV campus we could sense a buzz of excitement around us as we heard them proudly present their hard work they put into their respective science projects.
