Successful people may have hidden battles with depression

As a journalist, I have had the opportunity to interview successful individuals who struggle with mental health issues such as Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). One such person is Tien Dat, the director of a real estate trading floor in Hanoi. Despite his professional achievements and earning billions, he wakes up every morning feeling empty and unfulfilled. He struggles with feelings of weakness and discouragement but puts on a confident facade to lead his team of employees.

Similarly, Ha Linh, a 32-year-old fashion brand founder and social media influencer, experiences loneliness and depression despite her fame and success. She turns to alcohol and stimulants to cope with her emotions, feeling stuck and unhappy despite inspiring others with her work. These stories highlight the hidden struggles of successful individuals who battle with mental health issues such as MDD.

Dr. Tran Thi Hong Thu, Deputy Director of Mai Huong Day Psychiatric Hospital explains that MDD is characterized by intense feelings of sadness, lack of interest in activities, self-criticism, and constant feelings of emptiness. Many successful people struggle with MDD in silence due to societal expectations or personal reasons. Childhood trauma, high stress levels, and perfectionist tendencies can also contribute to the development of depression in high-achieving individuals.

Depression is a serious mental health condition that can lead to suicide if left untreated. In Vietnam, nearly 6 million people are estimated to suffer from depression and anxiety disorders. Dr. Thu emphasizes the importance of seeking help and practicing coping skills to manage stress and avoid chronic mental health issues. Meditation, exercise, healthy eating, social connections, and therapy are recommended strategies for maintaining mental well-being.

It is crucial for individuals with hidden depression to acknowledge their feelings and seek support from loved ones. Opening up about their struggles can help depressed individuals find positive solutions and improve their mental health. By breaking the stigma around mental illness and fostering open conversations about mental health issues like MDD, we can create a more supportive environment for those struggling with depression.
