Kevin Stine Appointed as Head of Information Technology Laboratory by NIST

Laurie Locascio, undersecretary of commerce for standards and technology and director of NIST, has appointed Kevin Stine as the new director of the agency’s Information Technology Laboratory (ITL). In this role, Stine will be responsible for managing over 600 staff and guest researchers who support IT measurement, testing, and standards in various areas including computer science, systems engineering, cybersecurity, and privacy.

Stine previously served as the chief of the ITL’s Applied Cybersecurity Division, where he led priority programs such as the National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence and the Workforce Framework for Cybersecurity (NICE Framework). He was instrumental in the development of NIST’s Cybersecurity Framework, a globally recognized source of cybersecurity guidance, and has expanded several critical programs that contribute to national and economic security.

Prior to joining NIST, Stine served as the chief information security officer of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), where he played a key role in establishing the agency’s cybersecurity program. His extensive government experience and expertise in cybersecurity make him well-suited for his new role as director of the Information Technology Laboratory at NIST.

Undersecretary Locascio praised Stine for his accomplishments in advancing IT measurement, testing, and standards at NIST. “Kevin has made significant contributions to our nation’s cybersecurity initiatives,” she said. “We are confident that his leadership will be crucial in advancing these efforts to meet the evolving needs of the IT industry.”
