Kimberly Garcia Defies Adversity to Win 20km Senior Women’s Race Walking Gold

Kimberly Garcia and Perseus Karlstrom come out on top in the 20km race

Kimberly Garcia, a renowned race walker, demonstrated her exceptional talent at the 2024 World Athletics Team Championships held in Antalya, Turkey. On a scorching Sunday afternoon, she emerged victorious in the 20km Senior Women’s Individual event by dominating the race on the two-kilometre loop course at the Antalya Expo Centre. Along with her teammate Evelyn Inga, Garcia led the competition midway through the race, setting them up for a potential 1-2 finish until Inga received a penalty.

Garcia’s triumph marked a remarkable comeback following her disappointing performance at the Race Walking Tour event in Dudince, where she had to withdraw after only two kilometres. Crossing the finish line in an impressive time of 1:27:12, Garcia immediately shifted her focus to the upcoming Paris 2024 Games, aiming to replicate her success on that global stage.

Despite Inga’s setback due to three red cards, defending champion Ma Zhenxia of China claimed the silver medal. Erica de Sena of Brazil secured the bronze medal, while Inga managed to recover and finished fourth, contributing significantly to Peru’s second-place standing in the team standings behind China. Spain took home third place as well, highlighting the fiercely competitive nature of this event. Throughout it all, Garcia’s determination and skill were evident as she set her sights on future accomplishments within race walking.
