Malaysia’s Green Hydrogen Revolution: RM12 Billion in Revenue and a Leap Towards Sustainability by 2030

Achieving the RM12 billion revenue target by 2030 through MOSTI’s efforts

Malaysia is committed to promoting green hydrogen technology in order to generate RM12 billion in revenue by 2030 through the hydrogen economy. Science, Technology and Innovation Minister, Chang Lih Kang, emphasized the importance of hydrogen in transitioning towards cleaner energy sources.

During a media briefing, Chang mentioned that creating a balance between demand and supply is crucial as this is a new ecosystem that needs to be established. The demonstration of the Mobile Hydrogen Refueling Unit (MHRU) and hydrogen-powered vehicles showcased the advancements in hydrogen technology.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim acknowledged the potential of Malaysia within the global green hydrogen market, which is predicted to be worth US$189.19 billion by 2050. The Hydrogen Economy and Technology Roadmap (HETR) aims to bring significant revenue and economic growth, with projections of up to RM12.1 billion in revenue and a contribution of RM49 billion to RM61 billion to the GDP by 2030. Anwar witnessed the demonstration of the MHRU and even took a ride in a hydrogen-powered Toyota Mirai.

Chang explained the benefits of hydrogen-powered vehicles, including quick refueling times, long travel ranges, and lighter vehicle weights. He noted that hydrogen vehicles can be refueled in just three to five minutes, allowing them to travel between 700-1,000 kilometers per refill. With these advantages, the adoption of hydrogen-powered vehicles can contribute significantly to a cleaner and more sustainable transportation system.
