Navigating the AI Age in Education: A Guide for Peru’s 2024 School Year

A Student’s Guide to Using Artificial Intelligence Responsibly and Effectively

As the 2024 school year began in Peru, over 6 million students returned to classrooms marking the start of academic activities. The rise of artificial intelligence has brought about a new era of education, where students are turning to technology to complete their tasks. However, it is crucial to understand the correct use of AI tools.

To create a guide on the appropriate use of AI tools for students, Trade interviewed Liliana Muñoz Guevara, director of the Comprehensive Basic Training Unit at the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, and Omar Florez, an AI scientist. Muñoz advises students not to be afraid to use new tools and to use them wisely as AI can facilitate personalized learning and deeper exploration of complex topics.

There are various AI tools available to students such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Wolfram Alpha that can aid in academic tasks. Perplexity is connected to the internet and provides accurate and up-to-date information while Wolfram Alpha is an online tool for solving mathematical queries. It is important to verify the original source of data when using AI chatbots to ensure accuracy of information.

AI can enhance academic performance in various areas but may be limited in disciplines requiring practical skills. However, in areas like music and dance, AI can contribute to creative processes through generative AI tools. It is crucial to consider ethical aspects when using AI in education and not lose sight of human aspect of learning such as peer interaction and teacher guidance.

In conclusion, while AI has great potential in enhancing academic performance, it should be used responsibly by considering its limitations and ethical implications. Students should strive to use these tools wisely while keeping human interaction and guidance in mind as they continue their educational journey this year.
