New Health Takes Holistic Approach to Healthcare by Addressing Food Insecurity in Boston Community”.

Health Center in Boston Offers Direct Delivery of Fresh Fruits and Vegetables to Patients in Need

In the heart of Boston, New Health is making a difference in the lives of those facing food insecurity. The health center, affiliated with Mass General Hospital and Boston Medical Center, is taking a holistic approach to care by directly providing fresh fruits and vegetables to patients in need.

During a recent visit by WBZ-TV cameras, the food distribution was observed firsthand. This initiative was developed in response to the growing food insecurity seen among New Health’s patient population. Each month, the health center purchases bags of fresh produce and distributes them to patients who have been notified in advance, including items like bananas, apples, oranges, avocados, asparagus, onions, and potatoes.

The impact of this program goes beyond just the individual patients who receive the produce. Many patients share the food with others in need, extending its reach to help 10 to 15 people each time a bag is distributed. Any leftover produce is placed in a community refrigerator for anyone in need to access. Patient Carmen Tirado expressed her gratitude for the help provided by the program, highlighting how important it is to support those facing challenges in accessing fresh and healthy food options.

According to Dan Coakley, public affairs coordinator for New Health, the positive feedback and impact of the program continue to drive their commitment to providing this resource to everyone in need. This initiative not only addresses food security but also fosters a sense of community support and care for those facing challenges in accessing fresh and healthy food options.

New Health’s approach highlights how healthcare providers can play a critical role in addressing social determinants of health like food security. By taking direct action to provide nutritious food options, New Health is demonstrating that they are committed not just to treating illnesses but also to promoting overall health and wellbeing within their community.
