New Nickname for Sherburne-Earlville School Board: Timberwolves

CNY school district selects a fresh nickname for its athletic teams

The Sherburne-Earlville school board in Syracuse, N.Y. has made the decision to rebrand its athletic teams as the Timberwolves, replacing the previous nickname of Marauders. This change was prompted by a directive from the New York State Department of Education, which required public schools to discontinue the use of nicknames, mascots, and logos that reference Native American culture.

In a student vote, high school students favored Timberwolves with 48% of their votes, while Wolves received 41%. Wolf Pack received 11% of the vote. Middle school students also voted for Timberwolves with 52%, Wolves with 34%, and Wolf Pack with 14%.

Although the new moniker is different, SECSD’s official wolf-themed logos and fonts established during a rebranding effort in the 2021-2022 school year will remain unchanged. Additionally, the school colors of Maroon and White will continue to be part of the branding.
