Once Dilapidated Airport Plaza Hotel Set to Transform into Spark under Hilton Umbrella

Historic hotel undergoes blackout for renovation

A dilapidated Roanoke Valley hotel, once known as the Airport Plaza Hotel, has closed for renovations. The hotel will undergo a transformation and reopen later this year as a budget-friendly establishment called Spark under the Hilton umbrella, managed by Kalyan Hospitality of Glen Allen.

Immediately after purchasing the property in October, Kalyan’s project manager, Cedric Johnson, took action to shut down the hotel. Two of its five floors had previously been taken out of service and the overall condition of the building was deemed to be in “pretty bad shape.”

The hotel, located at 3695 Thirlane Road N.W. in Roanoke, is being renovated to change its history and offer something new to the Roanoke area. Construction is expected to take approximately eight more months to complete. The structure was built in 1986 on Thirlane Drive near Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport and has borne various names over the years, including Rodeway Inn and Clara Inn in addition to Airport Plaza Hotel.

Kalyan, a hospitality management company based in Glen Allen, operates 30 hotels with a total of 3,102 rooms. The renovation project aims to give the Roanoke area a fresh and modern hotel experience.
