Palestine Leader Abbas Criticizes US over UN Rejection, Expresses Intention to Review Relations

Palestinian President seeks to reassess ties with the United States

Following the US rejection of a resolution recognizing Palestine as a full member of the UN, Palestinian leader Abbas has expressed his intention to review relations with the US. He criticized the US for supporting Israel and providing weapons and money to the country while opposing Palestine in international forums.

The US government has not responded to Abbas’s comments. The draft resolution calling for recognition of Palestine as a full UN member was rejected by the Security Council, with only three countries supporting it. The US maintained its position that recognition should come from a peace agreement with Israel, not through the UN.

President Abbas called the move unjust, immoral, and unjustified while Israel welcomed the decision. Palestine was granted observer status by the UN General Assembly in 2012, but full membership requires support from Security Council members. In 2020, Palestine severed relations with the US after rejecting former President Trump’s peace plan and has called on President Biden to restore peace in the region.

Despite recent tensions, Mr. Abbas remains committed to finding a peaceful solution to the conflict and hopes to see progress in the peace process soon. However, he has expressed skepticism towards the US and its role in resolving the issue. The situation between Palestine and the US remains complex, with both sides facing challenges in finding common ground.
