Rising trend of ATM thefts in Chicago: Unsolved burglaries and their implications

Witnesses say 2 thieves broke into a business on Chicago’s West Side and stole an ATM

On Friday morning, an ATM theft occurred in the West Town neighborhood of Chicago. The incident took place just after 2:30 a.m. in the 1500 block of West Division Street. According to witnesses, two thieves broke into a currency exchange and stole the ATM machine, taking it to a white van and fleeing the scene.

This crime is part of a growing trend of ATM thefts in Chicago. In January, an ATM was stolen from another currency exchange, and last month, a currency exchange on the city’s near West Side was targeted. The owner of this latest burglarized business reported that it had happened five times before, with the thieves breaking the glass door and taking the machine containing an unspecified amount of money.

Despite investigations by area 3 detectives, no arrests have been made yet, and there is still uncertainty regarding the connection between these burglaries. It remains unknown if this is an isolated incident or part of a larger pattern.
