San Antonio Tackles Food Deserts through Healthy Corner Stores Program

Where to find fresh produce as National Public Health Week kicks off next Monday

The National Public Health Week runs from Monday to April 7, with cities across the country emphasizing the importance of improving health. In San Antonio, the focus is on providing access to fresh fruits and vegetables.

In 2019, the Metropolitan Health District launched the Healthy Corner Stores program to provide healthier options at more affordable prices in areas considered food deserts. This program identifies locations in the city that are food insecure, typically within half a mile to a mile from an H-E-B, using information from the USDA. Currently, 45 stores in San Antonio are part of the program and accept SNAP benefits, with plans to add five more stores by 2025.

Royal Blue Grocery in downtown San Antonio is one of the participating stores, offering a variety of fruits and looking to expand their options through the program. The emphasis on promoting health and access to nutritious foods continues to grow in the city.
