Bilbao’s Port: A Hub for Wind Turbine Manufacturing and Transport
Bilbao’s port is experiencing a surge in work and capacity expansion, becoming a critical logistics hub for offshore and onshore wind farms. The port is strategically located in the Basque region of Spain, where the country’s first wind turbines were erected 30 years ago. In recent years, giant wind turbine parts have been manufactured in the port and surrounding areas, with Bilbao Wind Group leading the way.
The local company specializes in marine power plant foundations and hulls and has expanded its production capabilities in the port of Bilbao. One of its customers, Haizea, plans to produce large steel pillars for marine wind turbines directly in the port, making use of its strategic location for sea transport to projects across Central and Northern Europe.
Nordex, a leading manufacturer of wind turbine blades based near Bilbao, plays a significant role in the industry’s growth. Over 700 employees work at their factory to produce blades with glass and carbon fibers. The company has installed over 600 onshore turbines in Finland through its subsidiary and plans to erect taller towers and larger blades for more efficient power generation in low wind conditions.
Spain’s wind power industry continues to evolve, with a focus on new technological developments such as floating wind turbines offshore. Wind power generated 24% of Spain’s electricity consumption last year, contributing significantly to the country’s GDP. With over 250 companies operating in the sector, Spain exports products worth billions of euros annually, playing a crucial role in the manufacturing and control of wind turbines for projects across Central and Northern Europe.
