Staying Safe from Waterborne Illness: A Guide to Avoiding Beaches During Rainfall

Santa Barbara County Public Health Department issues countywide beach rain advisory

The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department (SBCPHD) issued a reminder to residents to avoid beaches during the weekend due to rainfall. Large debris like logs can increase the risk of injury for beachgoers, and stormwater runoff from drains can carry health risks such as diarrhea and fevers, making it unsafe for swimmers and surfers to come into contact with.

It is recommended to stay away from the water for at least three days after rain, and to avoid areas where runoff may carry bacteria and pollutants. Harvesting shellfish should be prohibited for 10 days following rainfall due to the potential presence of harmful materials. Even cooking shellfish may not completely eliminate viruses, chemicals, or metals that could be present.
