Susquehanna University Launches New Data Science Major in Fall 2024: Empowering Students to Make Informed Decisions Through Meaningful Insights

Susquehanna University introduces new data science major

Susquehanna University is set to launch a data science major in the fall of 2024. This new program will provide students with a comprehensive understanding of algorithms, machine learning, and advanced computational techniques that are essential for a variety of research fields. The department head and associate professor of math and computer science at Susquehanna, Jeffrey Graham, emphasized that data science is not just about data collection, but also about extracting meaningful insights from data to make informed decisions.

The data science major, along with a minor option, will be offered by Susquehanna’s School of Natural and Social Sciences. Students enrolled in this program will take courses in various subjects such as data structures, data mining, algorithms, machine learning, calculus, statistical methods, linear algebra, and discrete structures. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to customize their studies by taking courses in other disciplines to enhance their knowledge and skills.

In Susquehanna’s data science program, students will learn how to apply data analysis techniques like data cleaning and statistical modeling, use programming languages and tools effectively, and communicate their findings to different stakeholders, including those who may not have technical backgrounds. Graham highlighted the importance of data-driven decision-making in today’s world and the high demand for individuals who can analyze data and provide valuable insights to organizations.

Susquehanna’s data science program aims to equip students with the professional skills needed to pursue their career goals within a foundation of a liberal arts education. This holistic approach not only focuses on technical expertise but also on developing communication skills and fostering a lifelong learning mindset to thrive in a rapidly evolving global economy. With this new major program available at Susquehanna University starting from fall 2024
