The AI Revolution in Health Care: Balancing Trust, Understanding, and Risk Management for Successful Integration

The transformative potential of AI in healthcare is an unmissable opportunity that the industry cannot afford to overlook

The health care industry has been utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) for some time now, but experts believe that the current moment presents a crucial opportunity that the sector must not miss. During a panel discussion on April 14, it was emphasized that success in implementing AI in health care will depend on building trust and understanding among patients, clinicians, and leaders.

Michael Schlosser, M.D., from HCA Healthcare, emphasized the importance of addressing fears and mistrust surrounding AI to ensure successful integration. Schlosser predicted that within a year, the health care industry will have overcome many challenges to implement AI-supported solutions in routine health care functions such as scheduling. Troy Tazbaz, from the Food and Drug Administration, highlighted the potential of AI to alleviate administrative burdens that contribute to provider burnout. However, he stressed that the risks associated with AI must be carefully considered during implementation to ensure successful outcomes.

From a government perspective, Tazbaz noted that assessing risks associated with new technologies is crucial. The government evaluates whether the infrastructure is in place to manage these risks effectively before approving AI solutions. By addressing concerns about trust, understanding, and risk management, the health care industry can harness the full potential of AI to improve patient care and outcomes.
