The New Orleans Saints are bolstering their roster by adding a new kicker through the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program. This week, it was confirmed that Charlie Smyth has signed with the Saints after participating in the Scouting Combine and working out for the team. Smyth, who previously played as a goalkeeper for the Gaelic football club Down in Ireland, decided to pursue a career as an NFL player.
The NFL UK shared a video of Smyth successfully kicking a 63-yard field goal, showcasing his talent before the Saints’ offseason program begins next month. Meanwhile, Welsh rugby player Louis Rees-Zammit also secured a spot with an NFL team this week, joining the Chiefs. This week’s additions mark the expansion of the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program, with all 32 teams now having the option to add a 17th spot on their practice squads for international players.
With Smyth joining the team, the Saints now have a strong kicking lineup ready for the upcoming season. Blake Grupe had a successful rookie season completing 30-of-37 field goals and 40-of-40 extra points last year. With these two talented kickers on board, the Saints are set to improve their kicking game and give themselves an edge in close games this season.
