UN Security Council Recognition of Palestine: A Step Towards Peace or a New Battleground?

The issue of an independent Palestinian state will be considered by the UN General Assembly

The possibility of Palestine becoming a member of the UN Security Council is being discussed. On May 10, a resolution may be submitted to the UN General Assembly recognizing Palestine as an equal member of the Security Council. This is not the first time such a resolution has been presented to the UN Security Council, as a similar resolution was recently blocked by the United States. However, if adopted, an overwhelming majority of UN members are expected to vote in support of it.

Israel’s representative to the UN, Gilad Erdan, has suggested that if this decision is made, the United States should consider halting funding to the international organization. He made this suggestion after UNESCO granted full member status to the Palestinian Authority in 1988, which led to US funding being cut off. Despite this declaration of independence by the Palestinian National Council in 1988 and support from 140 UN members, it did not lead to the creation of an independent Palestinian state.
