Unlocking the Power of Genomics: A Regional Meeting to Strengthen Healthcare in the Americas

PAHO/WHO to convene regional meeting on human genomics for health

The Science and Knowledge for Impact Unit (SK/EIH) of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is organizing a regional meeting titled “Human Genomics for Health: Enhancing the Impact of Effective Research” in Brasilia, Brazil on May 15-16, 2024. The purpose of this meeting is to promote the implementation of genomics in clinical medicine and public health, as well as to strengthen genomics research in the Americas.

Genomics is an interdisciplinary field that focuses on studying the complete set of genes of organisms and how they function and interact with each other and the environment. This rapidly evolving field provides insights into areas such as clinical care, food safety, infection control, and is an essential component of the “One Health” approach.

The meeting will bring together representatives from PAHO Member States and regional experts and researchers working within the precision medicine ecosystem. The World Health Organization (WHO) Science Council has a program to promote equitable access to genomics research and technologies globally. The objectives of this meeting include raising awareness about the WHO Science Council report, sharing experiences and best practices in implementing genomic evidence to improve precision medicine and public health strategies, identifying challenges and strategies for genomics implementation, and creating opportunities for collaborations.

The regional meeting in Brasilia will have simultaneous interpretation in English, Spanish, and Portuguese to facilitate communication among participants. Join us on May 15-16, 2024 to learn and collaborate on the latest developments in genomics for health.
