Local Sports: USC Aiken Softball Completes Sweep of Lander

The USC Aiken softball team made history on Saturday by sweeping Lander in a three-game series, with two victories in five innings. The Pacers’ overall record improved to 23-12, and their Peach Belt Conference ledger is now 8-7.

The first game was dominated by the Pacers, as Jena Dewalt hit a single in the first inning that set the tone for the rest of the game. Kate Newberry followed up with a double that drove in two runs, giving USCA an early lead. Skylar Morley and Ella Stone also reached base and were brought home by Dewalt’s single. Dewalt then hit a home run in the fifth inning, further solidifying USC Aiken’s lead. Austyn Dixon, Grace Ann Thompkins, and Newberry all contributed to the final score, resulting in a 7-1 victory for the Pacers.

In the second game, Lander quickly took a one-run advantage over USC Aiken. However, Dewalt stepped up once again and led the team to a one-run advantage with her single and double steal with Lydia Johnson. Austyn Dixon’s single helped secure the lead for good, leading to a 10-2 win for USC Aiken. Dewalt was named MVP of both games for her outstanding performance at bat and on defense. The Pacers played well throughout both games and proved their dominance over Lander once again.

Overall, USC Aiken had an impressive weekend sweep of Lander that saw them improve their overall record to 23-12 and maintain their position atop the Peach Belt Conference ledger with an 8-7 record.
