Women’s Sports Foundation Celebrates 47 Years of Gender Equality in Sports with Kamala Harris and the Tara VanDerveer Fund for Women Coaches

50 years ago, Billie Jean King’s $5,000 check played a key role in establishing the Women’s Sports Foundation.

The Women’s Sports Foundation, founded by Billie Jean King in 1974, has been a champion for gender equality in sports for over four decades. The foundation was established after King won the $5,000 award for sportswoman of the year and used it as a catalyst to create the organization. Since then, the foundation has dedicated over $100 million to providing girls and women with opportunities and equality in sports.

The Women’s Sports Foundation is committed to eliminating barriers that prevent girls and women from achieving their athletic dreams. Through research, advocacy, and community programs, the organization strives to ensure equity in sports opportunities, equipment, facilities, and pay. The foundation also offers programs such as Sports 4 Life for underserved girls, travel and training grants, mentorship, and support for Title IX compliance.

Established a year after the passing of Title IX, the Women’s Sports Foundation has been at the forefront of promoting gender equality in sports since its inception. Vice President Kamala Harris recently recognized the vital role that women play in sports during an event celebrating Women’s History Month. The organization also focuses on growing the coaching pipeline through initiatives like the Tara VanDerveer Fund for the Advancement of Women in Coaching.

Looking ahead to its 50th anniversary, the Women’s Sports Foundation will host its annual awards dinner on October 16th in New York to commemorate its milestone achievements. The event will honor outstanding athletes while continuing its mission of promoting gender equity in sports.
