Creating a Workplace Culture that Supports Mental Well-Being: Tips from MHA Houston’s Award-Winning Approach

Establishing a mentally healthy work environment: Helpful tips

Mental Health America of Greater Houston (MHA Houston) recently received an award, The Bell Seal, for creating mentally healthy workplaces that all companies can aim for. According to the American Psychological Association, over one in five people feel that their work environment has negatively impacted their mental health.

MHA Houston President Renae Vania Tomczak emphasized the importance of modeling self-care as a way to create a mentally safe space for employees. By demonstrating the value placed on mental health, businesses can help support their staff in maintaining their well-being.

Some of the benefits that can contribute to a mentally healthy workplace include offering paid time off, creating relaxation spaces within the office, and implementing Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) that provide free therapy and other resources. Tomczak highlighted that these initiatives do not have to be expensive and can significantly demonstrate an employer’s commitment to their employees’ mental health.

Engaging with employees by including mental health questions in annual surveys and using the feedback to develop supportive strategies is also important. MHA offers resources on mental health support and can offer guidance to organizations on how to cultivate a mentally healthy work environment.
