A research team from the University of California, Riverside has developed a method that can dramatically improve the speed of a computer without any physical changes to the hardware. Dubbed Simultaneous and Heterogeneous Multithreading (SHMT), this technique utilizes the existing CPU, GPU, and TPU in a computer to perform different tasks simultaneously.

Usually, when we think about increasing a computer’s power, we consider replacing components such as the hard drive, RAM or processor. However, with SHMT, users can boost their computer’s performance without making any modifications to the hardware. By leveraging existing processors for general calculations, graphics, and machine learning tasks, SHMT increases efficiency while reducing energy consumption.

The researchers have conducted extensive testing on this method and found that it can double the execution speed of a program while lowering energy consumption by 51%. All that is required for users to benefit from this technology is a software update. This innovative approach to improving computer performance could soon be available to the public, offering an affordable and energy-efficient solution for speeding up computers.
