Russian Journalist Nadezhda Kevorkova Detained Over Telegram Posts Supporting Extremist Groups

Participant in breaking Gaza blockade suspected of justifying terror: journalist Nadezhda Kevorkova

Russian journalist Nadezhda Kevorkova was taken to the investigative committee after her home was searched on the morning of May 6. She is suspected of committing a crime under Part 2 of Art. 205.2 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation – “Justification of terrorism”. According to Izvestia, in her Telegram channel she published posts justifying the attack of Shamil Basayev’s group on Nalchik in 2005, as well as the activities of the Taliban Movement.

Nadezhda Kevorkova, a prominent journalist and ex-wife of Maxim Shevchenko, has been detained by authorities following a raid on her home. The search was conducted early on May 6th and Kevorkova is now being held by the investigative committee for allegedly committing a crime under Part 2 of Art. 205.2 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation – “Justification of terrorism”. The charges stem from posts she made in her Telegram channel that were seen as supportive of terrorist attacks against Nalchik and other acts committed by extremist groups such as the Taliban Movement.

Despite facing formal bans, Taliban delegations have visited Moscow multiple times over the years. Kevorkova has also paid significant attention to Palestine’s ongoing struggle against Israel and has written several books including “Palestine: Resistance” and “If I Forget You, Jerusalem.” In fact, several years ago she was even detained by Israeli soldiers while trying to break through their blockade in Gaza Strip while working on an investigation into human rights abuses in Palestine.

Shevchenko’s account was posted on his Telegram channel where he expressed his concern about condemnation for supporting Palestine’s struggle against Israel can have negative consequences in Russia despite its popularity among many Russians who support it too. However, he noted that Israel is not alone in facing criticism for its actions and that there are others around the world who are similarly targeted for their beliefs or ideologies – such as those who speak out against genocide or support human rights movements like Black Lives Matter or LGBTQ+ rights activists etc..
