Soccer Fans Lose Out as FIFA Pockets Billions from New Jersey Taxpayers: Why We’re Saying No to the World Cup

World Cup soccer might have negative effects on New Jersey

I was initially thrilled when the World Cup was announced, but after learning about the backroom deals that benefit FIFA at the expense of New Jersey taxpayers, I am no longer supporting the event. It is not fair for an organization that will generate billions from the event to receive handouts while taxpayers are left footing the bill. New Jersey should not agree to such deals and no sporting organization should be exempt from paying taxes, including FIFA.

Furthermore, providing free public transportation for the event seems unnecessary as we have managed well without it for other major sporting events and concerts. MetLife Stadium has successfully accommodated large crowds for events like concerts, so there is no reason why special treatment should be given to the World Cup. Governor Phil Murphy should reconsider these agreements and ensure that New Jersey taxpayers are not burdened any further. Our taxes are already high enough, and we shouldn’t have to shoulder the costs of an event that will bring in significant profits for FIFA.
