In a stunning announcement on social media, Emil Sutovsky, the CEO of FIDE, revealed that a 17-year-old chess player from Chennai had emerged victorious in the Candidates tournament held in Toronto. Despite facing off against well-known and experienced players such as Hikaru Nakamura, Fabiano Caruana, and Ian Nepomniachtchi, Gukesh was able to maintain his lead and secure his victory in the prestigious eight-player event.

Gukesh’s impressive performance in the tournament saw him defeat his opponents by a margin of half a point or more. In the final round, he only needed a draw against Nakamura to secure his win, with Caruana and Nepomniachtchi just behind him. Gukesh’s victory solidifies his position as a rising star in the world of chess.

Having previously overtaken Viswanathan Anand as India’s top-ranked player, Gukesh is now set to become the youngest contestant in the World Chess Championship. This accomplishment adds another milestone to an already impressive career and positions Gukesh as one of the most promising young players in the world of chess.
