Finland’s Potential Hosting of NATO Sub-Staff: Strengthening Security in the Region

NATO contemplating setting up a sub-office in Mikkeli, reports Iltalehti

Finland is considering hosting the sub-staff of NATO’s ground forces if deemed necessary by the alliance. According to sources cited by Evening newspaper, NATO is currently evaluating whether to establish a sub-staff of the ground forces in Mikkeli, Finland. This potential move comes as part of discussions on increasing NATO presence and cooperation in the region.

Norwegian Minister of Defense Bjørn Arild Gram has announced that his country’s defense forces have recommended placing the ground forces’ sub-staff in Finland. Discussions about hosting the sub-staff in Finland have been ongoing since February, with Finnish Minister of Defense Antti Häkkänen informing NATO of their views on the matter during a recent NATO defense ministers’ meeting.

If approved, this move would likely see Norway play an active role in enhancing NATO’s capabilities and strengthening its presence in Europe. The establishment of a high readiness headquarters in Mikkeli would allow for faster deployment of troops and resources when needed, potentially operating under the Norfolk headquarters on the US east coast.
