Microchip Technology and TSMC Join Forces to Boost Global Supply Chain Resilience with New Japanese Plant

Microchip Technology and TSMC collaborate on 40nm production in Japan

Microchip Technology, a US-based company, has announced that it has entered into a partnership with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) to utilize specialized 40-nanometer manufacturing processes at TSMC’s subsidiary in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. This collaboration aims to enhance the resilience of Microchip Tech’s supply chain and better serve a wide range of global customers in various sectors such as automotive, industrial, and networking applications.

According to Rosa Castanares, senior vice president of business management at TSMC North America, this initiative demonstrates TSMC’s dedication to supporting the long-term growth and innovation of their customers. TSMC recently inaugurated its first Japanese plant in Kumamoto Prefecture, with mass production expected to commence in the fourth quarter. Additionally, the company has announced plans to construct a second fab in the same Kumamoto town, Kikuyo. Once both fabs are operational, they are projected to produce 100,000 12-inch wafers per month at full capacity, utilizing various cutting-edge technologies ranging from 40 nm to 6nm.

This strategic partnership highlights both Microchip Technology and TSMC’s commitment to advancing technological capabilities and meeting the evolving demands of the global market.
